Canterbury Outreach and Canterbury UMW present a very special opportunity for you to meet and hear from Canterbury’s own Kate Kennedy, author of Once Upon a School. Kate is the daughter of Bette and Crawford Owen and she grew up in the halls of Canterbury an active member and involved in youth activities. Kate is a mom, a wife, a sister, a friend, and a passionate advocate for children. In 2018, Kate opened a school for children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. For more information on Kate’s work, please visit katekennedywrites.com.
On Monday, February 10 in Wesley Hall, Kate will be with us to share about the story of challenging the status quo and digging deep into her own story to find connection, hope, and new answers to old problems in her book. It is a story of racial inequity, generational poverty, and finding community in the most unlikely places. It’s about building a school, standing up for children, and finding your place in the world.
Kate’s book, Once Upon a School, will be available to purchase and she will sign copies.

“Kate Kennedy takes us into her world as she does the impossible—creates a tuition free private school for children who have experienced homelessness in Atlanta. The “how” she did it is as fascinating as the “why” she did it. Through her writing and by her example, she inspires us not just be “do-gooders” but to be “change-makers.” Once Upon a School encourages us to consider our own call to action on causes that matter and more importantly, take that leap of faith.”
—Kathy Izard, author of The Hundred Story Home, The Last Ordinary Hour, and Trust the Whisper
